The meeting concluded that:

1) Motor vehicle accidents among healthcare workers, be it work-commuting accidents or post-call related should be acknowledged as an increasing and occasionally fatal problem.

2) A collective effort is needed to prevent more losses of doctors or other health workers lives, who are vital members and contributors to the health of the community.

3) A local study is required to show evidence of correlation between the working hours of doctors and MVAs. The study will involve multiple agency collaborations between MIROS, JPJ, JKR and medical NGOs. It is hoped that together with other evidences it would provide the basis for a revision of current laws and regulations pertaining to safe working hours for doctors.

4) A campaign will be carried out to raise awareness about driving safety among medical personnel. Among the components of this campaign are defensive driving workshops, talks on road safety, engaging employers about issue of safe working hours and promoting alternative transportation method to be used during post-call or after shifts.

5) Engagement with the corporate sectors and the transportation industry is needed to create widespread impact of the planned campaign. The organisers of the meeting was extremely happy that GrabMalaysia joined the meeting and expressed their interest in our efforts towards protecting healthcare workers’ safety on the roads.

It was a historical day that witnessed a collective effort from multiple agencies and organisations to bring about positive changes and creating new strategies for the challenges that are faced by Malaysian healthcare workers. It is envisaged that the various plan of actions would also benefit all members of our Malaysian society who similarly work long after-office hours.
