Health Department Going All Out to Make State Smoke-Free

The National Strategic Plan for Tobacco Control 2015-2020 aims to make Malaysia free from the smoking habit by 2045 through the elimination of passive smoking in public areas.

To reach that goal, numerous campaigns and efforts have been put in place by the Selangor Health Department (Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Selangor) in line with the Selangor Bebas Asap Rokok policy.

They include:


1. Messages to public


Distribution of pamphlets, public service announcements on radio, talk shows and Seminar Fatwa Rokok Haram will be organised to raise awareness on the dangers of smoking.

2. Enforcement


Enforcement is carried out periodically by the department to ensure that the no-smoking regulations are followed.

3. IMFree Kits


IMFree is an educational and smoking prevention programme held in primary schools and pre-schools. The aim is to ensure that those born after 2009 will never pick up the habit.

4. Kesihatan Oral Tanpa Asap Rokok (Kotak)


The dental unit will spot young smokers during dental checks in schools to curb the habit at the initial stage.

5. mQuit Programme


This programme, which helps smokers kick the habit, will be strengthened at all health clinics. It is currently available at 65 health clinics and 67 private pharmacies.

6. Blue Ribbon Campaign


To encourage compliance with the no-smoking policy at places yet to be gazetted non-smoking areas. To date, operators of 18 premises have agreed to be promoted as Blue Ribbon Campaign premises.

7. Collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGO).


The state health department is also working together with NGOs such as IKRAM Health, which is made up of those in the medical industry, to make Selangor a smoke-free state.

8. “Kempen Nafas Baru Bermula Ramadan”
This campaign will be carried out in each district to encourage smokers to kick the habit during the fasting month.

9. Komuniti Sihat Perkasa Negara (Kospen)


Under the programme, houseowners and shopowners pledge their support and make their premises non-smoking zones. A total of 1,531 smoke-free zone plaques have been placed in front of houses and shops.
